BOAT INSURANCE

Protect Your Boat. Enjoy the Water.

Owning a boat is about where it can take you—not worrying about what could go wrong along the way. Boat Insurance can help protect your vessel, provide important liability protection and cover other eligible risks both on and off the water. A Sky-Agent® can shop available insurance companies and help you compare Boat Insurance coverage, pricing and discounts.

— The SkyBlue Way

Your Boat Is Different. Your Insurance Can Be Too.

Insurance companies don’t all look at boats and boat owners the same way. The type of boat you own, its value, where you use it, how it’s stored and your coverage choices can all affect the options available.

We Listen

Tell us about you, your boat and how you use it.

We Shop

Your Sky-Agent® shops available insurance companies for Boat coverage, pricing and discounts that fit your
situation.

You Choose

We explain the available options in plain language. You decide what’s right for you and your boat.

UNDERSTANDING BOAT INSURANCE

What Does Boat Insurance Cover?

Boat Insurance can combine several types of protection for your vessel and your financial exposure as a boat
owner. Available coverage varies by insurance company, boat, location and policy.

On-Water Towing

Coverage may help with eligible towing or assistance if your boat becomes disabled on the water, subject to policy terms and limits.

Boat Liability

Can help protect you financially if you’re legally responsible for certain injuries to another person or damage to someone else’s property involving your insured boat.

Collision

Can help pay for covered damage resulting from a collision with another boat or object, subject to the policy.

Comprehensive

Can help protect against certain covered losses other than collision, such as theft, vandalism, fire and some weather-related events.

Uninsured / Underinsured Boater Coverage

If another boater causes an accident but has no insurance—or not enough insurance—UB/UIB may help pay for covered injuries and damages up to your policy limits. Coverage availability and terms vary by policy and state.

Medical Payments

Coverage may be available for certain eligible medical expenses resulting from a covered boating accident, subject to policy terms and limits.

MORE THAN THE BOAT

What About the Equipment That Goes With It?

A boat may include far more than the basic hull and motor. Depending on the policy, coverage may be available for eligible:

  • Motors & Engines
  • Navigation Equipment
  • Fishing Equipment
  • Electronics
  • Anchors & Other Boat Equipment
  • Other Eligible Accessories

Don’t assume every accessory or piece of equipment has unlimited coverage simply because it’s aboard.

If you’ve invested in equipment or upgrades, tell your Sky-Agent® what’s on the boat.

DON’T FORGET THE TRAILER

Your Boat May Spend Plenty of Time Out of the Water.

For many boat owners, the trailer is an important part of the entire setup. Depending on the insurance company and policy, coverage may be available for an eligible boat trailer and certain related equipment. Your boat can face covered risks while being transported, parked at home, stored at a marina or stored elsewhere for the season.

Off the water doesn’t mean out of harm’s way.

DIFFERENT BOATS. DIFFERENT NEEDS.

What Kind of Boat Do You Own?

Boat Insurance isn’t limited to one type of recreational vessel. SkyBlue can help shop available insurance options for many types of eligible boats, including:

  • Powerboats
  • Fishing Boats
  • Bass Boats
  • Pontoon Boats
  • Bowriders
  • Ski & Wake Boats
  • Center Consoles
  • Sailboats
  • Cuddy Cabins
  • Other Eligible Recreational Boats

Your boat’s type, size, value, age, horsepower, use, storage and navigation area can affect available coverage and pricing.

We’ll help you shop from there.

An Important Coverage Difference

Agreed Value vs. Actual Cash Value

Agreed Value

With eligible Agreed Value coverage, the insurer and boat owner establish an insured value for the vessel, subject to the policy’s terms.

Actual Cash Value

Actual Cash Value generally considers depreciation when determining the value of the boat following a covered loss.

Don’t compare Boat Insurance on premium alone. Understand how your boat will be valued if something happens to it.

MORE WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR TIME ON THE WATER

Boat Insurance Can Go Beyond the Basics.

On-Water Boat Towing

If your boat becomes disabled on the water, available towing coverage may help with eligible towing or assistance expenses, subject to policy terms and limits

Fuel Spill Liability

Available coverage may help with certain eligible costs or liability associated with a covered accidental fuel or oil spill, subject to policy terms and limits.

Wreckage Removal

If a covered accident leaves a damaged or sunken boat that must be removed, wreckage-removal coverage may help with eligible removal expenses, depending on the policy and circumstances.

Water Sports Coverage

If boating includes waterskiing, wakeboarding or tubing, ask about protection available for eligible water-sports activities. Tell your Sky-Agent® how you actually use your boat.

IS BOAT INSURANCE REQUIRED?

Your State May Not Require It. Your Marina Might.

Boat Insurance requirements vary by state and circumstances. While many states do not broadly require recreational boat owners to carry Boat Insurance, requirements can depend on the vessel, how it is used and other factors.

State law is not the only reason you may need coverage. Your marina may require proof of Boat Insurance—often including minimum liability coverage—before allowing you to dock or keep your boat there. If your boat is financed, your lender may also require physical-damage coverage.

WHEN YOU’RE NOT BOATING

  • Theft
  • Fire
  • Vandalism
  • Certain weather events
  • Other covered losses

WHAT ABOUT PERSONAL WATERCRAFT?

Jet Ski or WaveRunner?

Personal Watercraft can have different insurance needs from larger recreational boats. SkyBlue can help you shop available coverage for eligible Jet Skis, WaveRunners and other Personal Watercraft.

PRICE & VALUE

How Much Does Boat Insurance Cost?

There isn’t one standard price for Boat Insurance. Insurance companies can consider factors such as:

  • Type of boat
  • Boat value and age
  • Motor and horsepower
  • Where you live
  • Where and how you use the boat
  • Navigation area
  • Boating experience and history
  • Coverage limits and deductibles
  • Storage arrangements
  • Available discounts

That’s Why We Shop.

Different insurance companies can evaluate the same boat and owner differently.
